Gumroad

Gumroad, at gumroad.com, is an online storefront and checkout for creators who sell digital products, run by Gumroad, Inc., which its terms of service name as the operator and place in San Francisco, California.1 Wikipedia says Gumroad was founded in 2011 by Sahil Lavingia, a secondary source we use because Gumroad’s About page doesn’t give a founding year.2 Gumroad describes its purpose as helping people “experiment with all kinds of ideas and formats,” and a one-person company can use it as a store page, a checkout and a delivery system in one account.3

What sets it apart for a founder is that Gumroad acts as the merchant of record. Its pricing page says it handles tax collection and remittance worldwide, effective January 1, 2025, and its terms describe Gumroad as the seller for indirect-tax purposes, providing tax collection, reporting and remittance, handling buyers’ refund and chargeback requests and first-line support.41 The charge is a flat 10% + $0.50 per transaction on direct sales and 30% on sales found through its Discover marketplace, with no monthly fee.4 Its help center says the 10% + $0.50 doesn’t include card processing (2.9% + $0.30) or PayPal fees on direct sales, while the 30% Discover fee includes all processing fees.5 Once a seller’s paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month drop to 5% + $0.50 with no application.5 The terms were last updated on September 14, 2026, and accounts that existed then are bound by the changes from October 14, 2026.1
